For the past month, I’ve been a major hiatus for what I soon learned would make me an advocate for putting yourself first.

I needed a major reset. It wasn’t planned and I didn’t intend to leave my people hanging without any new content…

But it was necessary.

Today, I’m sharing my story and journey, hoping it will remind your why putting yourself first must be a priority. You’ll soon read why it could literally mean life or death.

Signs That You May Not Be Putting Yourself First

For the past few months, I had been feeling like I needed to slow down.

But slowing down would mean no new clients at Lavender District, getting off schedule with my promotion calendar, and my biggest fear, no money coming in consistently.

I’ve always had this belief that if I wasn’t constantly doing something then I wasn’t being as productive as I could be.

Can you relate to this?

It’s a belief that I’m currently trying to shift out of.

After months of feeling like this, I just couldn’t push myself forward anymore.

It felt forces, and the way that I was living my life felt mediocre.

I wasn’t as present as I could be in my life. My business had taken over and I had no time for myself.

Some of the signs that it may be time to put yourself first might look like this:

  • Overwhelm
  • Lack of creativity
  • Feeling like nothing is going right in many areas of your life
  • Failures or setbacks affect your self-worth and esteem

I was feeling all of these things. I tried to correct it with mindset work, positive think, etc. I believe in these tools, but sometimes you need something more.

No one can just keep going and going.

What started as a few days off, turned into a month of unplugging to reconnect with myself and start living again.

How To Start Making Yourself a Priority Again

So how do you even start putting yourself first in your life again? There really isn’t any right way, but a great rule of thumb is to stop doing things you don’t want to do.

If it feels forced, delegate it or make it wait. Trust me, the sky won’t fall.

You also can’t go wrong with resting and waiting. Waiting for inspiration to hit and for answers you’ve been seeking to manifest.

I know this may feel like a risk. I mean, how long will you have to wait for answers you’re seeking?

This sounds counterproductive but rest begets more time and more productivity. Stop doing stuff and you’ll do more stuff. Sounds crazy but…

Take a break from social media. Unplugging can work wonders and can create some much needed peace and quiet. You may not think about social media as loud and noisy, but to the mind, it can be very overstimulating.

Unplug for a few days and allow your mind to go quiet and just see how quickly your mind resets with great insights and ideas.

Stop ‘trying’ to come up with content. Great content flows and and isn’t forced. If you give yourself a chance to reset you will be shocked how much new content just flows out of you.

Don’t know what to post in Instagram…

Then don’t. You’re brand will survive. Taking time away is better than outing out mediocre content that no one cares about.

Think about who you want to be with the people and things that are important in your life. Even though we’re talking about putting yourself first and making yourself a priority, life is nothing without people, places and things to enjoy it with.

When you’re not showing up as your best self, it affects the people that you love. It affects the way you’re living and how you approach life.

If you want to be influential in the lives of others and have impact in the world, which I know you do, then you have to start with you. Having a vision for why it’s important and who you affect positively or negatively can be motivational.

Ask yourself these 3 questions and see what comes up: Who am I? Who am I being? Who am I becoming.

Talk about getting realigned! These 3 questions will definitely get you to self-correct when you know that how you’re living isn’t reflective of who you are and how you want to show up in the world.

Remove Guilty About Putting Yourself First

A word on guilt.

I’ve learned from many different experiences in my life that guilt is a useless emotion.

It tricky because although it seems like it comes from caring about others, it’s really just about you.

What good can you do when you’re focused on feeling bad about yourself?

Putting yourself first is one thing you most definitely shouldn’t have guilt about. The cost of not doing so it too high.

The only thing we have control over in this life is how we live and treat ourselves. Not making yourself can cause stress, anxiety and depression.

One leads to the next and to the next.

As someone who has struggled with anxiety and depression, I can tell you that it’s not something to play with. It’s a disease that affects the poor as well as the poor.

Depression and suicide is on a rise and a sign that we need to be taking better care of ourselves as individuals.

I hope this article helps you to start thinking about how much of a priority you’re making yourself and your wellbeing.

If any of this is hitting a nerve for you, it may be time for you to consider taking some time off for yourself.
